Carol's Loc Butter Review and BSL Update

Last week, I did the inevitable and ran out of my most precious commodity . . . my Shea Butter.  How could this happen?  What is the world coming to?

I decided to twist my hair with Carol's Daughter Loc Butter which was a disaster.  I purchased this product over a year ago and could not remember why I stopped using it for my daughter's hair, which is sensitive to Shea butter.  Well I soon found out why:
  • My ends were dry the whole time and that has never happened with my Shea mixture
  • My roots kept buckling causing me to re-twist my hair, so now I'm double handling my hair.  You know I don't like this!
  • My twists were coming out causing me again to Double Handle my hair.  WTFreak!
  • After twisting out, my hair had SO MANY TANGLES!!!  Ugh!
I try to support family owned and small businesses but I'm sorry I can never use this product again.

As a result, I had to cut off some ends and trim my hair.  Any product that causes me to lose hair is not for me.  I think Carol's Daughter is a great product line but their Loc Butter only caused tangles and jangles for me.

Check out my video for this product review and to see a pic of my quest to BSL.

Twists Pin Up Style - Chop Sticks

Here's another pinned up style using chopsticks.  This hair accessory is very classy and can instantly add some style to your twists.

If you're concerned about cost of your accessories, don't be.  Venture out to your local supply stores and dollar stores.  I purchased 4 different types of chop sticks all for $1.00.

Twists Pin Up Style

I decided to show some pin up styles I've done with my 2-strand twists.  I'll post the styles when I remember to take a picture of them.  :~)

Twists can get boring really fast if all you do is wear them down or in a bun.  I love hair accessories and will be showing how I make use of my hair bling.  Enjoy!

In this pic, my twists are in a bun with a pretty flower added to soften the look.

My Twists are back :-)

Yesterday I twisted my hair in small twists, with a few sprinkles of medium size twists, to significantly reduce daily manipulation.  I love swimming and usually swim with my hair twisted.  However, during my vacation I swam with my hair out; freely floating in the water.  I did my usual routine of washing and conditioning afterwards and wore my hair in a wet bun.  When we returned home, I swam again with my hair out.  It was so hot 'til I wanted to calm my body temp down more so than worrying about my hair.

By Saturday, I realized I had wet and manipulated my hair every day for the last 1.5 weeks.  So Sunday, I twisted my hair and Monday wore it pinned.

So did my daily manipulation damage my hair and cause excessive shedding?  Absolutely, not!  I ensured my hair was heavily conditioned and added protein every other day to strengthen my tresses.  Wearing my hair in a wet bun also helped since my ends were conditioned and tucked away.

I'm truly starting to believe my hair will grow rather it's in a protective style or not.  The key is to ensure your ends have proper moisture-balance and you are eating balanced meals.

Vacation Hair

Hello Loves!  I returned from vacation and had no worries about the upkeep of my hair.  I left for vacation with a twist-out knowing it would be ruined since I planned on swimming.  My entire vacation was spent either in the sauna, swim pool, or shopping store lol.

The day I went swimming, I prepped my hair prior to jumping in the pool with almond oil to coat my hair and protect it from the chlorine.  After swimming, I washed my scalp and hair with shampoo and conditioned as usual.  Since I knew I would be swimming the next day, I simply wore my hair in a bun.  Easy, breezy :-)

I've mentioned in my videos and blog, that my hair is gel sensitive and I did not want to apply gel on day only to wash it out the next.  So to lay down my ends and remove my fuzzy-wuzzies, I used Oyin Handmade's Shine and Define Serum and wore a satin scarf for about 15 minutes.

Braid-n-Curl with no Heat - The Results!!

This video is part 2 of my Braid-n-Curl with no Heat technique.  I maintained this style similar to my other braid-n-curl video (using Lottabody) by pulling my hair back with a satin scarf and placing a bonnet over the scarf.

I'm becoming more adventurous with my hair and not as neurotic about wearing protective styles as I was last year.  I'm learning to love my hair more and let her loose sometime.

Braid-n-Curl with no Heat

I recently finished a video on a braid-out that is really more of a braid-n-curl.  I used all natural products and spiral rods to give my hair more body and have plenty of bounce.  I absolutely love the results! There are 2 videos, with part 1 showing my process and part 2 with the results.

To achieve this style, I decided to not use Lottabody since I wanted to see how my hair will last without a product specializing in hold.  My main product was Shea Moisture's Curl Enhancing Smoothie.  This product was great with my daughter's hair so I was hoping it would work for me and it absolutely did.

My hair is incredibly soft and has a ton of bounce and movement.  I layered my products in the following way:
  • Water for moisture
  • KCKT as a leave-in
  • Curl Enhancing Smoothie for moisture and shine
  • Very light amount of coconut oil for my ends
I must say the one thing I'm worried about is the hold.  I can already tell my hair is very, very soft so I know my curls will not last 6 days like the Lottabody allowed.  I plan on re-braiding my hair every other day to maintain the style and to prevent daily manipulation of my hair.

Do I have OCD?

I don't believe I do . . . ok maybe a very, slight mild case.  Lol!!!  I have found when I absolutely am in love with an item, I purchase it in bulk.  My favs are hair accessories, coffee beans, lip gloss, and dare I say SHOES.  My love of shoes is a completely different topic and would take waaaayyyy too much time :~).

Today I decided to stop by TJ Maxx to see if they had my Giovanni Smooth as Silk Conditioner.  Well they did and I purchased the last 2 on the shelf.  Yah for me!  I also purchased one 50/50 Hydration Shampoo since my family and I are using it more frequently.  Between my daughter swim classes and my hubby starting to use the Giovanni line, I probably need to start buying the shampoo in bulk as well.

Any who, I was almost panicked when I realized I ONLY have one full bottle of conditioner left.  How lucky am I that I stopped by the Maxx :~).

How do I become a Giovanni sponsor?  Lol!  No, seriously how do I accomplish that task.  I want free products since I <3 Giovanni's product line.  Giovanni, email me :~)

So what products/items do you obsess about?

Finger Detangling

A while ago, I spoke about the importance of finger detangling.  Well, I decided to show you how I finger detangle in my recent video "Finger Detangling."  Wow, what a title :~) Lol!

I try to keep my demonstrations simple and my videos short.  I usually use a very light oil to finger detangle, such as olive oil or grapeseed, since I don't want product build-up on my hair.  In this video, I was prepping my hair for shampooing so I finger detangled, shampooed, conditioned, detangled with a comb very lightly, and styled.

A key item to remember: if you take time to finger detangle you should remove majority of your shedded hair and save yourself a tremendous amount of time when detangling during the conditioning process.

The Versatility of 2-Strand Twists

I've been wearing 2-strand twists for a little over 18 months.  It's a great protective style because it aids in you caring for your hair relative to length retention but most importantly for maintaining healthy hair.  However, I do get bored with the same look so I love to change it up while keeping my protective style.

I decided to use my Lock Loops to add some cute spirals to my hair and I love the look.  Today, I decided to twist my hair out and I have beautiful, bouncy curls due to the Lock Loops.  Shake it, shake it!!!

2-strand twists benefit my hair by:
v      Protecting my hair from the elements, including me lol
v      Holding moisture
v      Ease of oiling
v      Length retention

I find with my hair the 2-strand twists really aid in keeping my hair moisturized and absorbing oil.  I can heavily moisturize my hair with a twist-out and by the end of then night that moisture will be gone!  Also, I love oiling my hair with coconut oil to prevent dryness and because I love the smell of coconut.  I use an applicator bottle to dispense the oil on my hair and of course with the 2-strand twists, oiling is a breeze.

So if you're bored with the same 'ole look to your twists, try spiraling, braiding, or coiling them.  Each of those styling techniques will give your twists a different look for a different you.

Painting with a Twist!

I had a very enlightening experience this past weekend which really tested my creativity.  I attended a 'Painting with a Twist' session with a group of my girlfriends that was extremely fun and artistic.

By no means am I associated with this company but I most certainly will be going back.  The painting session consisted of:
  • An artist to direct you on what colors to use for your canvas
  • A studio designated solely for your group
  • Tons of fun and laughs

The "twist" side of the ordeal is you bring your drink and food of choice.  Since there was plenty of ladies there, we had an array of food and a variety of drinks – there was water too!  Lol.

The company site is: www.paintingwithatwist.com.  They also have family days, children activities, birthday celebrations, and group functions of all kinds.

Check out my video and how I was able to achieve my splash of wine painting.

Best Hair Tool Ever!

This weekend, I decided to take a break from my twists.  I just wanted a different look to my hair so I styled my hair in finger coils.  I really, really love the look J but this post is not about my hair style.

I usually wear my hair twisted in for 5 days then twist out for 2 days.  For the first twist-out day, I wear my twists as is usually stretched out.  I have naturally big, thick hair so I reveal the moments I see my hair looking smooth and hanging sleek.

The first night of my twist-out I separate the twists, apply my leave-in concoction, and re-twist the hair in medium twists.  For the second day of my twist-out, my hair is voluptuous.  My curls are defined, soft to the touch, and full of volume.  At nighttime, I will repeat the same steps but further separate the hair.

I have found this series of separations to be my best arsenal in hair retention.  By finger detangling over the course of 2 days, I’m able to PATIENTLY detangle my hair in preparation for my pre-poo.  When applying my pre-poo, I also gently finger detangle my hair.  Therefore, I am detangling my hair in 3 separate times prior to shampooing.

Can you say hair retention?  Lol!  My fingers are the best hair tool I have used in growing strong, healthy hair.

Love and peace, Peace and love,

8.25"

What was the first thing that came to your mind in reading the title?  Lol!

I lost 8.25" off my body!  Who hoo!!!  This equated to a little over 4 lbs.  I must admit I did not workout as planned due to life happening lol.  I carry a lot of hats and sometimes one of them fall.

There are only 24 hours in a day and I need a little rest.  J  I'm very pleased with the results and look forward to further shrinking.

3.00" around my buttocks

Hair Straightening Comb?

I was looking through my bathroom closet which pays homage to my hair accessories, tools, styling creams, makeup . . . anything beauty related.

I was surprised to find I still had a straightening comb and oven.  Say what!!!  I could not determine why I would have kept them other than considering straightening my hair to check the length.  Obviously, I have learned I can check my length without heat by using two-twist outs with plaiting.

This weekend my plan is spring clean my bathroom closet COMPLETELY.

Out with my expired makeup to make room for my new makeup.

Out with my old hair tools I used for my relaxed hair.  The only new addition is Paul Mitchell's leave-in conditioner ("The Conditioner") since I'm trying to perfect my wash-n-go and the Kinky Curly Knot Today just is not working well with the Eco Styler Gel.

Have you done your spring cleaning?

Insulin Managment Series - Glucose Correction

I'm so happy to have posted the first video in my insulin management series.  My YouTube channel and blog are about my everyday life, of which diabetes is THE most aspect in managing my life - outside of God of course.  I loves Him :-)

Insulin management is so complex and I believe a lot of people have simplistic views on how diabetics should manage their health.  I've been told all I need to do is eat right, exercise, and take my medicine . . . ok really.  If it was that simple, hundreds of thousands of people would not be struggling to live a full, healthy, happy life with this disease.  Clearly, if you view diabetic management as a simple, one-dimensional entity, you do not have a full understanding of the damage capability of this disease.

I have fought a battle for almost 20 years to prolong my life and I am still learning tools and techniques I can adapt to my lifestyle to beat type 1 diabetes.

No complaints, no pity, no drama from me - my focus is on life and laughing my way to a billion laugh lines.  :-)

Goodbye Braid 'n Curl

Well my Braid 'n Curl was great while it lasted, which was six days.  I wonder if I could have stretched it longer since I gave up on day five and wore my hair in a curly pony.  Friday's are my workout day so I try to wear my hair in a style that's easy and simple to manage.  Quite frankly by the end of the week, I don't care how my hair looks as long as it's easy to go from work to the gym.  Lol!

I just edited and uploaded my Braid 'n Curl tutorial which I've attached below.  I really loved my results (so did the hubby) and I will definitely be rockin' this style in the future.

I'm currently wearing a textured bun to test how my hair hold up during workouts.  I can't wait for the weather to improve so I wash-n-go.

Stay blessed and don't forget to laugh,

Your Humbled Servant

Thank you God for leading and guiding me.

Thank you God for showing me love in my time of anxiety,
I was lost, wounded,
felt no one loved me.
You proved me wrong, again.

Thank you God for trusting me with
Your love,
Your time,
Your patience in
hearing my laughter,
comforting my tears and
witnessing my smile.

Thank you God for chastising me,
I know I needed it at the time.

Thank you God for making me strong,
determined, and driven.
I was born with these qualities;
I inherited them from You.

Thank you God for my stubbornness . . .
. . . now let me explain.
Yes, sometimes, I needed to be humbled;
Yet other times, this quality kept me from
compromising my morality.
I learned the common ground through your
teachings and blessings.

Thank you God for being there for me,
true unconditional love.

Thank you God,
for You.

Thank You,
Thank you.

My Braid-n-Curl Results

I mentioned on a previous post that I wanted to wear some different styles since I've been rockin' two-strand twists F-O-R-E-V-E-R.  I still plan on protecting my hair as much as possible to reach my BSL goal this year, but I really miss my hair in different styles.

I decided to try my first Braid-n-Curl and I absolutely love it.  Of course I used zero heat but did step out of my comfort zone on the product I used to achieve my style.  I'm very, very, very . . . did I say VERY, particular about what products I put in my hair since I don't like weighed down, flaky, dry, thirsty, sticky, nor gooey hair.

I used "Lottabody Olive Oil Setting Lotion" to set my curls.  I purchased the product from Sally's when the 32-oz was on sale (you know I love a good deal).  The braid-n-curl was my second usage of this product and I decided to mix 1-part water to 1-part Lottabody.

My first experience with Lottabody was with a week old twist out and I decided to spray the product on my curls to liven them up.  However, my mixture was 4-part water to 1-part Lottabody and my hair became extremely dry and hard.  Later, I realized my hair does not respond well to an oversaturation of water without proper sealing.

So this time, I mixed 1-part each and my hair feels phenomenal.  My curls are super-soft but with hold.  To achieve my braid-n-curl, I braided the hair and left variant lengths of hair out which I curled using perm rollers.  I will be posting a video of how I completed this style and pictures of how my hair progressed throughout the week on my YouTube channel this weekend – perhaps. J

Here are some cute pics of my hair:

If you're curious, here are the ingredients: Water (Aqua) (Eau), Polyquaternium-11, Olea Europea (Olive) Fruit Oil, Peg-40 Lanolin, Polysorbate 20, Parfum (Fragrance), Dmdm Hydantoin, Methylparaben, Ci 47005 (Yellow 10), Ci 42053 (Green 3).

Tangle Teezer Review

My roots are completely detangled for the first time ever with me as the stylist!  It's unbelievable and absolutely possible due to the Tangle Teezer.

Let's get the legal stuff out the way . . . I am in no way paid by this company.  I purchased the Tangle Teezer with my own cash.  Now on with my review J

I love it . . . review done! J

Seriously, this is a miracle worker for extremely curly and coily hair like mine.  The top-middle section of my hair has been extremely difficult to detangle at the roots since I've been natural.  This section is my "4W" hair because I don't know what hair type it is.  This hair may not even be human - Lol!!!!

My hair was freshly shampooed with Giovanni 50:50 clarifying shampoo, then Giovanni Smooth as Silk conditioner was applied to the hair.  The next step consisted of me finger detangling my hair to ensure major tangles were removed.  The final step was using the Tangle Teezer to eliminate the remaining tangles, especially at my roots.

I was very, very impressed with the ease and smoothness of my hair produced by the Tangle Teezer.  My 4W hair was no match for the Tangle Teezer.  My roots were detangled and smooth with no breakage, pain, nor difficulty.  I'm not easily impressed but I was thoroughly impressed and awed with this product.

If you have extremely curly, coily hair like me, invest in the Tangle Teezer.  You can find it at Sally Beauty supply and Amazon.com for $9.99.

Check me out using the Tangle Teezer.

PJA – Product Junkie Anonymous

I need help . . . lately I have been purchasing products that I need.  No really, I truly need them.  Lol!

I have to talk myself down and say "Cam, you don't need that.  Let it go.  Woosaaaaaa!"  As with any PJ, I have triggers that set me off into product land.  My trigger for the last week has been the prospect of wearing wash-n-go's.

Winter is my absolutely favorite season.  I love the snow, the relaxing drives in the snow, and the coziness of the winter when I wrap myself around my hubby (ooh that's a nice picture).  HOWEVER, last spring, summer, and fall I wore my hair in two-strand twists to expedite my hair growth to APL.  Therefore, I have been rockin' two-strand twists for over 18 months.  Say what!

I need a break from the twists especially while working out.  My hair is not withstanding the frequent workouts since I'm hitting the gym anywhere from 4-6 days a week.  I don't like the fuzziness of my twists since I have to really moisturize my hair after the gym since my strands be very dry especially my scalp.

I plan on doing a product review for the items I've recently purchased on YouTube.  I'm also changing my reggie a bit due to the workouts.  I will be twisting my hair every week to ensure my hair is fully moisturized and my scalp is healthy.  I plan on wearing my twists small in the first two front rows and medium throughout.

Love and peace, Peace and love,

Refreshed Twists

I notice since I've been working out, my twists look more worn and tired faster.  My scalp also tends to get dry sooner due to the sweating.  To ensure my protective style last longer without manipulation, I have been rinsing my scalp and adding moisture to my hair with water.

Last night I refreshed my twists with the water and gently massaged my scalp with the running water.  My scalp felt great and was clean, my hair was very, very moisturized, and my twist looked amazing.  I added my leave-in conditioner concoction, re-twisted the perimeter twists with my Shea mixture, and voila my twists look brand new.

Here is how I wore my hair today (my hair withstood the workday lol).  I grabbed the twists and pinned them with a clip.  I wanted a free-flowing look to my hair and really liked the outcome.

Professional Styles

Natural hair is beautiful and can be displayed at all occasions. I've worn my hair in two strand twists for the last 18 months and have worn my hair in updo's, side sweeps, bunned, and down.  All these variations of my twists are what make this style so amazing and professional.   Here is are two cute updos I wore to work:

In this style, I made 2 braids: one on the left and one on the right.  With the middle hair, I rolled the hair upward into a bun.  I then took the left braid and wrapped it around the top portion of the bun to the right.  I took the right braid and wrapped it around the bottom portion of the bun to the left.  I used decorative bobby pins to add a little bling, bling.  :-)  You can also wear a headband to this style.

This is another quick, easy, and neat updo where I put my 2-strand twists in a ponytail using an elasta band and pinned the the hair with decorative pearl hair pins.

These are very neat, professional styles which allow me to protect my hair and continue my hair growth journey.

Chunky Twist-out

Well the weather outside is frightful . . . but my hair looks so delightful. J

It took me 2.5 hours to get to work today but I walked in with my curls poppin!  I absolutely love two strand twists.  They have been one of the most important elements in retaining my moisture balance and length.

I was fighting the flu bug for approximately 5 days which threw my twist cycle completely off.  Yesterday, hallelujah, I was finally able to wash my hair and decided to do chunky twists since I'm in the middle of a work week.  I absolutely love them and plan to stretch them tonight so I can see my length.

Sneezes, sniffles, and Theraflu please

Winter is my favorite season.  I love watching the snow flakes fall and unite as one to build beautiful snow hills.  I love the winter breeze chilling my face as I blow cold smoke from my mouth.  I love the coziness of the season, especially with hubby lol.  There's only one flaw to the winter . . .  all the blasted flu virals going postal!

I was knocked out for a four day count last Wednesday.  So much so, that I actually missed 2 days of work.  What the freak!  I do not like missing work.  I have the sick days available but it's more so about something, anything preventing me from going about my day.  Ugh!

By Thursday morning I was running a good 103.1 temperature, completely stuffed nose, consistent non-productive cough, and my eyes were burning (probably from the temp)!  What the freak!  Friday morning I was ONLY running a 101.5 temperature so I decided to go to work.  My idea was I used 1 sick day and that's all I'm using for now.  I wonder how that plan played out?  Not good since I was sent home costing me a time and gas.  I guess other people don't want to get sick.  Interesting J

I always like to end on a positive note so here it is: If you're truly sick don't worry about the sick days, worry about yourself.  There are plenty of sick days left in the year but there's only one you.

Especially me since I'm uniquely fabulous!  Lol.

'Til next time,

Love and Peace, Peace and Love.

Doctor's Orders

Yesterday I visited my doctor for the usual check-up: Cholesterol, HbA1C, Medication Review, heart still working . . . you know, the usual.  J

I was shocked to find out my LDL cholesterol was a little too high and I had a mild case of anemia, as if Type 1 Diabetes wasn't enough.  The great part about my visit was my blood pressure was perfection (110/70) which leads them to believe my LDL number was due to dietary changes.  If my blood pressure was high in conjunction to the high LDL, then I would be in trouble since that scenario could mean clogged arteries.

When I joined Weight Watchers, I knew I had to consume more protein especially since I don't eat meat regularly.  I'm not a vegetarian but I find the texture of meat to be unappealing.  I love fish which is limited to 3 times a week.  Therefore, I'm always short on my protein intake.

I take full responsibility for my LDL and know it is my dietary change with consuming a high quantity of eggs every week in addition to my love of BBQ chips.  LOL!  I told my Doctor that and all he could do is laugh and tell me to cut it out of my plan.  My rationale was . . . well it fit in my WWPoint Plus plan lol.

Well not anymore.  I'm done!  Cold Turkey!

I'm very competitive and I want to show my doctor dietary changes can improve my LDL and anemia, so this is my plan of action:
ü       No eggs, chips, nor high saturated fat foods until my next check-up in approximately 3 months.
ü       Daily intake of Ferrus Gluconate (iron) per Doctor orders.
ü       Introduction of raisins to meal plan to naturally aid in iron deficiency.  Corn is also a really great source of iron but I'm already consuming corn on a daily basis.  Clearly, I need more natural iron foods J

Although I missed my boiled egg this morning, I'm determined to make lemonade from my temporary lemons.

Til next time,

Love and Peace, Peace and Love

Weight & Size Loss Challenge!

Last year I was very successful in dropping from a size 16 to a size 10.  My goal this year is to reach my trophy size of 7.  Lol  I haven't been a size 7 since my sophomore year in college.

To be honest, I'll be fine with a size 8 but my ultimate goal is a 7.  Imagine all the clothes I would catch: the skirt suits, sexy jeans, awesome shirts, and short-shorts lol.

My best armor to tackle this goal is staying positive.  I celebrate every win on my journey.  If I lose 1/4" I rejoice since I could have gained a 1/4" instead.  If I lose 0.2 lbs, I celebrate since I could have gained a pound.

I always wonder why people throw a fit over a pound gained but is disappointed if they "only" lost a pound in a week.  Do you know 1 pound is equal to 3500 calories?  Don't sweat on a pound lost J; that's a lot of calories you eliminated in week.

Stay positive and keep on moving!

Love and Peace, Peace and Love,

*Cam*
